With so many powders, capsules, and drinks on the market, choosing the right collagen can feel overwhelming. The good news is that with a few simple guidelines, you can find a supplement that works for your needs and delivers real benefits.

Purity and Sustainability

Since collagen is sourced from animals, the quality of that source really matters. Always look for products that come from sustainably farmed, grass-fed animals or responsibly sourced marine collagen. Third-party testing is also important to ensure that what’s on the label is exactly what’s in the product – free from contaminants, fillers, or unnecessary additives. A high-quality collagen will be simple, clean, and trustworthy.

Hydrolysed Collagen Peptides

Collagen on its own is a large protein that’s difficult for the body to absorb. The most effective supplements use hydrolysed collagen peptides, sometimes called collagen hydrolysate. These have been broken down into smaller fragments so they can be absorbed and used more efficiently.

You’ll often see the molecular weight of collagen listed in Daltons (Da). For best absorption, look for a product under 5,000 Daltons – and the lower the number, the better. This ensures that the collagen peptides are small enough to be well absorbed and put to work in your body.

Choosing the Right Format

Collagen comes in several forms – powders, liquids, capsules, and tablets. While they can all work, some are much more practical than others.

  • Bovine collagen – Great for all-round benefits, as it provides Types I and III collagen, supporting skin, joints, bones, and gut health.
  • Marine collagen – Made from fish, it is highly bioavailable and especially popular for skin health. A good option if you don’t eat meat but do include fish in your diet.
  • Vegan collagen alternatives – While plants don’t contain true collagen, vegan-friendly formulas often supply nutrients that support your body’s own collagen production, such as amino acids, vitamin C, and antioxidants. These can still be a good choice for vegetarians and vegans.
